20 Nov Benefits of Cottage Style Homes
Many people associate cottage style homes with small beach houses. While many beach homes offer a cottage house look and feel, this design style has benefits for inland dwellings as well. The cottage design style features casual and authentic furnishings mixed with graceful lines. Typically, designers will mix soft colors and home accessories that personalize the home. Frequently, cottage style homes offer a vintage feel.
A cottage home makes sense near the beach because the design features a cozy feel that accumulates over time. A vacation home or beach house will naturally collect accessories throughout the years that increase the overall comfort of the home. Cottage homes welcome personalization.
The cottage house gained popularity back in the 1800s. However, the design remains popular because cottage house plans maintain space for individuality. In addition to being cozy in nature, designers believe the cottage style yields “a beautiful house [that] fully reflects a fine character.”
Cardello Architects embraces cottage style homes as they allow us to showcase the individuality of our customers through exquisite home design and architectural plans. RAC is particularly skilled at developing architectural character and dynamic curb appeal, inspired by the long-lasting tradition of the cottage home.
Cottage Style Homes Leverage All Available Space
In this cottage style home in Rowayton, CT, the original land included two small dwellings destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. Due to restrictive zoning regulations, the footprints could not be changed. Plus, the remodeled buildings had to adhere to flood zone restrictions. The community contains many attractive coastal cottages, so the new cottage style homes needed to mesh with the existing look and feel of the neighborhood.
As a result, the new dwellings were lifted, while the rear building was renovated, and the front of the building was redesigned to retain a beautiful waterfront view of Farm Creek. Additionally, despite the limited footprint, the living space is comfortable and roomy. Plus, the home features a beautiful three-story stairway, showcased in the large side window panel.
Cottage Style Homes Offer A Timeless Feel
Cottage style home design includes comfort and individuality. For example, these homeowners requested a whimsical feel in both the architectural design and interior decorations. In fact, this project was one of the first major residential homes completed by the RAC team back in 2002. This home offers an example of the timelessness that a cottage house provides its owners. Plus, the design features fantastic views from every room in the house, along with plenty of outdoor living spaces, which are beautifully framed by the large peninsulas jetting out from Stamford and Darien.
Cottage Style Homes Include Individuality
Many people associate the cottage home with a beach or pool house. The design style can be found in an accessory structure such as this great pool house. This homeowner wanted a resort-like atmosphere anchored by the pool house. Due to the customized components of the style, this pool house contains features normally found in a traditional home, on a much smaller scale. The pool house includes a large entertaining room for gathering and opens up conveniently to the trellised terrace. Also in this structure, a relatively complete kitchen and full bathroom flank the living space. Plus, the rear of the dwelling contains a laundry area, changing room, outdoor shower and storage. Ultimately, the pool house took on the material and character of the main residence, which is an historic structure.
Cottage Style Homes Create a Cozy Atmosphere
The Noroton Bay area of Darien CT is a small, coastal community that consists of waterfront properties. Many of the houses are considered cottage style homes. Members of the community navigate the neighborhood via golf carts. Plus, residents enjoy private beach access mixed with spectacular waterfront views. This close-knit community provides a friendly environment for full time residents with neighborly activities such as their annual Halloween celebration.
In essence, a cozy cottage house must co-exist within the community. In this custom cottage design, the homeowners expressed their desire for modern components and interesting spaces. As a result, their custom architectural design maximizes the space available on their particular lot. Through the use of traditional proportion and detail, we were able to develop a plan that was both functional and artistically appealing for this young family. For example, the outdoor shower, the exterior trim details (which are slightly above proportion), the interior railings, coffered ceilings, barrel vault ceilings, the corner glass window and the use of stone on the chimneys offer a modern element that meshes seamlessly with the existing structures in the community.
